Amarnath Yatra bus accident: 16 pilgrims dead, rescue operation underway; PM says 'extremely pained'

Several pilgrims are feared dead and over 30 injured after a bus carrying Amarnath Yatris fell into the gorge in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday. 19 injured are being airlifted for treatment.

According to a PTI report, 16 pilgrims have lost their lives after the bus fell off the Jammu-Srinagar highway. Army personnel are carrying out the rescue operations.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ramban, Mohan Lal said, " The bus carrying the pilgrims skidded off the road, turned turtle and rolled down into the nullah at Nachlana belt of Ramban late this afternoon." He added, rescue operation was underway."

Earlier on Monday, seven people were killed and fifteem were injured after terrorists opened fire on a bus carrying 17 pilgrims from Baltal to Mir Bazar. The terrorists also attacked a police party in Bantigoo area.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to twitter to express condolence to those who lost their life in the accident. He said, "Extremely pained by the loss of lives of Amarnath Yatris due to a bus accident in J&K. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased. I pray that those injured in the bus accident in J&K recover soon."
