Face to Face with Ch. Lal Singh
To make highway eco-friendly and green my objective: Ch. Lal Singh

In order to make highway eco-friendly and green, the work is under progress and fencing of enclosures is also being undertaken. This was stated by the minister of Minister for Forest, Environment and Ecology, Choudhary Lal Singh during his exclusive interaction with the Young Bites. Here are the excerpts of his interaction. VIJAY GUPTA VG: The forest department is in process to develop green corridor along the highway. What is the progress of that project? LS: It is true that the forest department is trying to develop green corridor along the haighway through plantation and allied activity and in this regard we launched the plantation drive in Samba district under the Greening of Highway Phase-1 extending from Lakhanpur in Kathua to Udhampur. The entire plantation will be done by Social Forestry wing of Forest department. After completion of enclosure and fencing work, massive plantation drive will be held along the highway in this season. VG: What is objective behind ‘Green Highway’ project? LS: The objective of this endeavor is to develop a framework for the plantation of trees along highways, reducing the impact of air pollution and dust, providing shade on glaring hot roads during summer, reducing the impact of noise pollution and soil erosion, preventing the glare from the headlights of incoming vehicles, and curbing carbon emission. Under the ‘Green Highway' project, the first three rows will have ornamental plants along the highway whereas the back rows will have commercial species of plants. VG: Road connectively is still a big problem in rural areas, what you say?
LS: It is also true that the road connectivity is still a big issue for us, but the government is committed to provide better road connectivity to the people of rural areas and especially those residing in far off places. The government has focused its attention on developing locations having tourist potential to increase footfall which can generate employment and further enhance the socio- economic condition of the locals.
VG: Deforestation is a big issue, how will you tackle this issue?
LS: Definitely, deforestation is a big issue and there is permanent destruction of forests in order to make the land available for other uses. An estimated 18 million acres (7.3 million hectares) of forest, which is roughly the size of the country of Panama, are lost each year, according to the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). But to tackle with this issue, we have asked our department to conduct more and more plantation drives.
VG: Drug addiction is a serious issue, what is your take?
LS : The drug abuse is the emerging menace in the society which has not only shattered the individuals and families but an entire society. We have already lost one generation to violence and now we cannot afford to lose another generation to drug abuse.
There should be a social boycott against those people who are involved in this trade. However, it is also the responsibility of parents to keep a check over their children, so that they could be saved from falling to the prey of such elements.
So, this was all that the Minister for Forests, Ecology and Environment Choudhary Lal Singh, has to say about his department. Next time, we will here again with some other personality.
