VG: SRTC is running into losses, is this true?
SS: JKSRTC is an important asset in the kitty of J&K Government and every step will be taken to revive its glory. The Corporation which has run into losses for decades will see no losses during the financial year 2016-17. Under PPP mode, we have signed an MoU under which a fleet of top class AC buses will be introduced on different routes within two months.
The new buses will run on all the important routes in the State including Baramulla to Srinagar, Anantnag to Srinagar, Kupwara to Srinagar, Jammu to Srinagar, Poonch to Srinagar, Doda to Jammu, Poonch to Doda, besides other vital roads between various districts of the state. JKSRTC is meant for the welfare of people of Jammu and Kashmir and it is the obligation of the Government to provide quality services to people. Although there is a huge potential in the State, these PSUs need Government support. Although private players have a monopoly over public transport system, it will be my mission to take out JKSRTC from the morass.
VG: Condition of SRTC is very bad, is there any plan for its revival?
SS: Though, the condition of SRTC is not good these days and it is entirely due to the negligent attitude of previous government, who failed to take any step to bring this derailed department back on the track.
JKSRTC is an important asset in the kitty of Government and every step will be taken to revive its glory. I want to assure the people that with the same set of people and same infrastructure, the Corporation which has run into losses for decades will see no losses during the financial year 2016-17. Under PPP mode, we have signed an MoU under which a fleet of top class AC buses will be introduced on different routes within two months.
We are going to introduce hi-fi and fully AC buses, which will be on the roads within two months time, people will see a sea change in this debit ridden department.
This was not all that the minister for Transport, Sunil Sharma has to say about this department. We will talk more about him and his department, which is a very important department, in next part, till then good bye.
VG: Vehicles emitting pollution is a big issue, is there any plan with the govt to tackle this issue?
SS: Definitely, the vehicles emitting the poisonous gases are polluting the environment. To tackle this issued, we are setting up two specialized institutes for driving and training of drivers of commercial vehicles is coming up in Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, a proposal has been sent to the Government of India for setting up Inspection Certification Centres in the state to check excessive pollution-emitting vehicles.
VG: Continuous accidents in hilly areas are still uncontrolled, why?
SS: It is true that due to continuous accidents in hilly areas many precious lives has been lost, but we are very serious over this issue and in this regard the House Committee prepared a report on areas of concern and gave recommendations about preventing road mishaps. An action taken report on the recommendations of House Committee should be implemented soon, so that we can put an end to the road accidents in those areas.
VG: Why government failed to frame a comprehensive road safety policy in the state?
SS: The state Government is in talks with the Centre to start water transport service in Kashmir Valley, which will ease off burden from the already congested roads. For the first time in the history of J&K, the Government is going to implement a comprehensive Road Safety Policy in the state.
